Keratin Linked to Stronger Tooth Enamel
A new study published in the Journal of Clinical Investigation has found that keratin is essential for healthy tooth enamel. The study, conducted by the National Institutes of Health, found that individuals with genetic keratin mutations were more likely to develop cavities, just as they were more likely to have weakened fingernails and a number of hair disorders.
Keratin is a protein necessary for healthy skin and hair. It is produced by amino acids, meaning its production relies on protein-heavy foods. However, the body requires vitamin C and vitamin B7 to metabolize proteins and provide the building blocks for keratin – indicating once again the importance of a nutritious and well-balanced diet.
