Metal-Free Dental Fillings
Metal fillings can draw attention away from the more attractive qualities of your smile, which may be reason enough to consider replacing them. But cosmetic issues are far from the only reason Beaverton dentist Dr. Michael Negru may suggest tooth restoration with metal-free dental fillings.
To place metal fillings, a large amount of healthy enamel must first be removed, further damaging an already weakened tooth. Moreover, once packed into a tooth, metal expands and contracts as temperatures in the mouth change. This can allow fillings to crack or break teeth, come loose, or fall out completely – all of which will necessitate additional and often expensive restorations. And this is to say nothing of the potentially harmful substances contained in metal fillings.
While there is some debate over the toxicity of metal fillings, the American Dental Association considers existing evidence compelling enough to recommend children and pregnant women refrain from having them placed. Dr. Negru believes that this courtesy should be extended to all of our patients and has opted to only offer meta-free fillings at our family dentistry practice. He would be happy to discuss this with you in more detail and to answer any questions you may have about tooth-colored fillings during your next apportionment.
