New Sleep Apnea Treatment May Offer Great Alternative to CPAP
If you suffer from sleep apnea, you are in good company. Approximately 18 million Americans deal with this dangerous condition. Sleep apnea occurs when your airway becomes blocked while sleeping, resulting in repeated stoppages in breathing that prevent you from sleeping through the night. While the loud snoring associated with sleep apnea may be a serious problem for your bed partner, you are also at increased risk of serious health conditions such as heart attack, stroke, and high blood pressure.
For years, the gold standard for sleep apnea treatment has been continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP), a device that uses an air compressor, hose, and face mask to force air into your airway while you sleep. Due to the cumbersome nature of CPAP, it has a very low compliance rate, making it a less than ideal treatment option for many sleep apnea patients.
Dr. Negru typically does not recommend CPAP as a treatment for his patients due to this low compliance rate. Instead, he prefers to use other options such as:
- DNA appliance therapy
- SomnoMed oral appliance therapy
However, there is a new sleep apnea treatment method currently in the testing phase that may also offer you the relief you need. It is called the Inspire Upper Airway Stimulation. This treatment makes use of an implantable pacemaker-like device that is inserted just underneath the skin in your chest region. The device is connected to an electrode that stimulates the nerves on your tongue, preventing it from closing your throat and collapsing your airway.
Dr. Negru is always looking for new treatment options that can provide his Beaverton-area patients with the high quality care they deserve. As the Inspire device moves through the FDA approval process, he will do his due diligence and evaluate the treatment to see if it delivers comparable results to the sleep apnea treatment options currently utilized by our practice.
