Tea Tree Oil and Oral Health
Tea tree oil can be found in a number of holistic dental products. Research on this oil have shown it to have antibacterial and antifungal properties, and it has been proven effective at treating a range of skin conditions. Its usefulness in dental care is, however, not as well established.
Studies have found that toothpaste with a concentration of 2.5% tea tree oil can reduce gum bleeding in people who suffer from gingivitis. However, these same studies have found tea tree oil insufficient at reducing plaque underneath the gum line – suggesting it is, perhaps, more effective topically. Although, products that combine tea tree oil with xylitol have shown to be effective at treating minor gum disease and reducing plaque above and below the gum line.
Beaverton family dentist Dr. Michael Negru strongly supports the use of natural ingredients in oral healthcare products. He also recognizes that the efficacy of some of these products is, as of yet, unestablished. During your routine visits to our office, Dr. Negru would be happy to answer your questions about holistic dentistry products and which would be most useful for your specific needs.
