There are many different options available to improve the appearance of your smile. One common alternative to porcelain veneers is Lumineers®. They are a type of veneer that is extra thin. For the right patient, they can achieve excellent results.
This page will provide a basic overview of the differences between porcelain veneers and Lumineers, but the best way to determine which option will best address your needs is to speak with Dr. Michael Negru in person. Please call or book an appointment online to schedule a consultation at our Beaverton cosmetic dentistry office.
PORCELAIN VENEERS VS. LUMINEERS
Both porcelain veneers and Lumineers can be used to correct similar cosmetic problems, such as:
- Crooked teeth
- Worn teeth
- Irregularly sized or shaped teeth
- Discolored teeth
- Gapped teeth
The primary differences between porcelain veneers and Lumineers stem from the thickness of the material used. Porcelain veneers are wafer-thin shells of dental porcelain which get bonded to the front surface of your teeth to improve their appearance. Lumineers are even thinner than traditional porcelain veneers. They are made of a feldspathic porcelain material, and they are typically the thickness of a contact lens.
In order to complete the porcelain veneers procedure properly, Dr. Negru must prepare your teeth to accommodate the veneers. This involves removing some of your natural tooth enamel. Because Lumineers are thinner, Dr. Negru does not have to remove any natural tooth structure to place them. As a result, the Lumineers process can be completed more quickly, and they are reversible.
IDEAL LUMINEERS CANDIDATES
In general, Lumineers may be an effective option if you:
- Are not very picky about what you want to change with your smile
- Prefer a more conservative approach that does not remove natural tooth structure
- Do not grind your teeth
Dr. Michael Negru offers Lumineers as an option, but he typically recommends porcelain veneers because they achieve more natural looking results. During your initial consultation, he will evaluate your teeth and listen carefully to your aesthetic goals in order to determine the right option for you.
